Who we are
TripProof is a trading name of JCY Construction (Pty) Ltd, Hartbeesfontein, North West, South Africa. Contact: pietervdm1982@gmail.com.
Privacy policy
We process personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA). We only collect what we need to run TripProof.
What we collect
- Account details: name, email address and profile picture (e.g. from Google sign-in).
- Vehicle and trip data you enter or record: car model, trips, GPS location during check-ins and trip logs, charger photos.
- Competition data: points, entries and prize contact details.
- Payment references (payments are processed by our payment providers; we do not store card numbers).
- Basic technical data: device/browser type and error logs.
More about location data
Location is only used when you check in at a charger or record a trip, to verify the check-in (within about 150 m of the charger, with GPS accurate to about 50 m, and a second reading about 3 minutes later while the app is open) and calculate distance and energy. We store only your distance from the charger, never your exact position. We do not track you in the background. Check-in photos are taken with the in-app camera; the date, time and a rounded area (about 1 km) are printed on the photo for verification, and other photo metadata is removed.
Charge a Buddy (volunteers and drivers who ask for help)
If you sign up as a Charge a Buddy volunteer, we keep your area, what you can offer, your cellphone number and a location rounded to about 1 km, with your consent, to match you with nearby drivers who need a top-up. When a driver asks for a buddy, they see only an approximate distance (in whole km) and what you offer: never your name, number or location. Your cellphone number is shared with a driver only after you tap "I can help" on their request AND that driver picks you. Only then do you see the driver's number and where they are, and they see your number. Nothing is shared with anyone else. You can remove yourself from the buddy list, and delete your help data, at any time in the app (Help → "Delete my help data"). TripProof staff can see buddy details to manage and pay out jobs.
Partner and data-sharing consent (buddies, charger hosts, info sharers, businesses)
When you sign up as a Charge a Buddy volunteer, a charger host, an info sharer (trip data, reports, photos) or a business, we ask for up to four separate consents. Each box is off until you tick it, and each is a separate POPIA consent: (a) share my info and reports with TripProof (what you type and the reports, trips or photos you send, to run that feature and check reports before other drivers rely on them; kept while you take part); (b) show my name or business name and credit me publicly (first name or business name only; without it you show as "A TripProof user"; removed from public pages as soon as you withdraw); (c) contact me (your cellphone and/or email, only about that role, never for marketing and never sold); (d) use my location, rounded to about 1 km (never your exact spot; without it we use your town). Some roles need (a) or (c) to work, for example a buddy has to be reachable; the form says so. We record each choice with the date and time, the exact wording you saw and its version, your account and the purpose, so we can show what you agreed to. You can view and export that record, and withdraw any consent with one tap, in the app under Me → Privacy and consent. Withdrawing stops all further use straight away, takes you off the buddy list where it applies, pauses a business listing if it's (a) or (b), and removes your name from public pages. The record of the consent and the withdrawal itself is kept while your account exists, as proof (POPIA s11 and s18).
Suggestions and support tickets
Ideas, votes and comments on the Suggestions page are public without your name unless you tick "show my first name". Support tickets, their screenshots (stored privately, photo metadata removed on your phone) and our replies are visible only to you and TripProof staff. You can delete your ideas still marked New, your comments, votes and tickets at any time (Support → My tickets → Delete); ideas already Planned or later stay without your name.
Dealers, installers, charger suppliers and reviews
Our dealer and installer directory comes from public listings (each row shows its source and date). A business marked "Not a TripProof partner yet" has not registered with us and never receives your details. Partners register with their own consent (see Partner and data-sharing consent) and are checked by TripProof; installers must show a registered-person number and a recent Certificate of Compliance. A dealer or installer gets your details only when you tick "let a dealer contact me" (or ask for a quote) for that car or charger and area, after we show you which one business it goes to. Reviews: only people who contacted a partner through TripProof can review it, using the request saved on their phone; we don't store who wrote a review. A salesperson's first name is shown only with praise; criticism is shown against the business, not the person. Businesses can reply, and anyone can report a review for us to check.
Charger shop terms (CPA and ECTA summary)
Prices are as listed by each shop on the date shown, including VAT unless the listing says otherwise; the supplier's quote on the day is the price. Cooling-off (CPA s16): if you buy because of direct marketing, you may cancel in writing within 5 business days after the agreement or delivery (whichever is later), without a reason or penalty, and get a refund within 15 business days. Online purchases (ECTA s44): you may cancel within 7 days after receiving the goods; you may have to pay the direct cost of returning them. Defects (CPA ss55–56): you may return defective goods within 6 months for a repair, replacement or refund. Installation: every new wallbox circuit must be done or supervised by a registered person (Installation or Master Installation Electrician) working for a registered electrical contractor, to SANS 10142-1, with a Certificate of Compliance; TripProof is not the installer. Portable chargers that plug into a wall socket are not listed until NRCS approval is confirmed. Commission: TripProof may earn a referral commission from partner suppliers and installers; we disclose it and it doesn't change what we suggest. Payment: PayShap via Ozow comes first, with card as backup; until payments open nothing is charged through TripProof. DRAFT: being reviewed by a lawyer.
Better deals, insurance referrals and test drive days
Better-deal requests: when you ask for help with a car, charger, electrician or insurance, we keep the request, your contact details and the exact consent wording you agreed to, and pass them only to the partner named on the form (or handle it ourselves if no partner covers your area). Partners get nothing unless you tick the box. Insurance: TripProof is not a financial services provider; quotes come from licensed providers. We only refer you to insurers or brokers that are authorised financial services providers (FSPs) under the FAIS Act, registered with the FSCA; we give no advice on cover, and any commission or referral fee is disclosed. Test drive days: your booking (first name, phone, slot, cars) is kept for the event; attending dealers see it only if you tick "dealers may contact me", and only for their own brands. You can cancel or withdraw at any time. Dealer gifts and specials are shown as owner reports or as listed by the dealer or maker, with the date; the dealer confirms the final offer. DRAFT, for review by a lawyer (FAIS/FSCA referral wording, CPA, POPIA) before launch.
Stop ratings and reviews
Ratings are linked to your account so you can rate each stop once a month and delete it later; other drivers see only averages and short comments without your name. Phone numbers, email addresses and number plates are removed from comments automatically, and TripProof can hide any comment.
Why we use it
- To provide the app (sign-in, trip planning, trip logs, charger check-ins).
- To run draws fairly, prevent fraud and contact winners.
- To process payments and keep required records.
- To improve the service, using aggregated or de-identified data.
Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with service providers who help us run TripProof (hosting, database, sign-in, payments), when required by law, or with your consent (e.g. when you choose to contact a dealer).
Service providers and cross-border transfer
Providers may include Cloudflare (hosting), Supabase (database), Google (sign-in) and payment providers such as Ozow and Paystack. Some store data outside South Africa; we use providers with adequate data protection as required by POPIA section 72.
Retention
We keep personal information only while your account is active or as long as needed for the purposes above, and for legal/tax record periods (e.g. payment records up to 5 years). You can ask us to delete your account.
Your rights
You may ask to access, correct or delete your information, object to processing, and withdraw consent. You may also complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa): inforegulator.org.za.
Security
We use encrypted connections (HTTPS), access controls and reputable providers. No system is perfectly secure; we will notify you and the Regulator of a compromise as POPIA requires.
